Living With Cirnecos
An Extraordinary Companion… for the Right Family
The Cirneco dell’Etna is unlike any other breed.
They are ancient dogs with ancient instincts—intelligent, affectionate, athletic, endlessly entertaining, and just independent enough to keep you humble. Living with a Cirneco is less about owning a dog and more about sharing your life with a clever partner who is always thinking, always observing, and always ready for the next adventure.
If you’re looking for a dog that wants to be involved in everything you do, you’ve come to the right place!
Our Cirnechi hike with us, travel with us, visit wineries and breweries, join us at outdoor restaurants and festivals, and even accompany us to church. They’re just as happy exploring a new trail as they are spending the evening curled beneath a blanket on the couch.
They thrive on being part of the family.
They Think for Themselves
One of the qualities we love most about the Cirneco is also one that surprises many first-time owners. These dogs were developed to hunt independently across the rugged volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. They weren’t bred to wait for constant direction—they were bred to solve problems, make decisions, and work as partners with their people.
They notice everything. A new object in the yard, a different route on your walk, a visitor at the door, or the smallest change in your routine rarely escapes a Cirneco’s attention. Their awareness of the world around them is part of what makes them such fascinating companions.
That independence doesn’t mean they aren’t eager to please. Quite the opposite. They love working with their families, but they appreciate understanding why they’re being asked to do something. Positive training, patience, and a sense of humor go much further than repetition or force.
Hunters at Heart
No matter how well-trained, every Cirneco still carries the instincts of an ancient hunter. A squirrel, rabbit, or fluttering leaf can suddenly become the most important thing in the world.
For that reason, we believe secure fencing and thoughtful leash management are essential. They are not dog’s you easily trust off lead. While some Cirnechi develop excellent recalls, we never expect instinct to disappear completely.
Recall isn’t something you teach once—it’s a lifelong game built on trust, enthusiasm, and generous rewards. The goal is for your dog to believe that coming back to you is always the best part of the adventure.
They Will Make You Laugh
One thing that rarely appears in breed descriptions is the Cirneco’s wonderful sense of humor. They seem to approach life with curiosity, creativity, and just a touch of mischief. Whether they’re inventing their own games, proudly showing off a “treasure” from the backyard, burrowing beneath every blanket in the house, or deciding there might be a better way to accomplish what you just asked, Cirnechi have an uncanny ability to make you smile.
We often joke that they are equal parts athlete, comedian, and cuddle bug. They take their work seriously—but they don’t always take themselves seriously. Their playful antics and expressive personalities are one of the many reasons people who fall in love with a Cirneco often find it difficult to imagine life without one.
Active Minds, Adaptable Hearts
The Cirneco is wonderfully versatile.
Whether your interests include hiking, lure coursing, Fast CAT, Barn Hunt, Scent Work, agility, obedience, or simply exploring new places together, these dogs are eager to be involved. They enjoy having both their minds and bodies engaged, but they’re equally content to spend the evening relaxing with their family after a day of adventure.
One of our favorite things about the breed is this balance. They can spend the morning racing across a coursing field and the evening burrowed under the blankets, convinced they’re lap dogs.
Is This Your Breed?
The Cirneco is not the perfect dog for everyone—and that’s perfectly okay.
If you’re looking for a dog that is independent yet deeply devoted, athletic yet affectionate, playful yet thoughtful, the Cirneco may steal your heart just as it stole ours.
We encourage every prospective owner to spend time learning about the breed, meeting Cirnechi whenever possible, and talking with multiple breeders. Choosing a puppy is a decision that should last a lifetime, and we’re always happy to answer questions—even if the conversation ultimately leads you to a different breed.
